Free Templates Where Every Format Actually Computes
Rent receipt template
Tenants need rent receipts for their records, housing benefits, and tax credits; landlords need them to prove what was collected and when. One clean receipt per payment keeps both ledgers honest.
The fields that make it a rent receipt
Beyond the money: the rental period the payment covers, the property address and unit, who received it, and the lease it belongs to. A receipt that says "March rent, Unit 4B, 123 Main St" survives any dispute; "received $1,400" does not.
Late fees and partial payments
List late fees and utilities as separate lines so the base rent stays visible - it matters for lease renewals and for any proceeding where payment history is evidence. If a tenant pays short, the computed balance line records exactly what remains.
Why every payment deserves one
Even with bank transfers, issue the receipt: tenants claiming renter tax credits will ask for a full year of them in January, and producing twelve at once from bank statements is an afternoon you will not enjoy. One per payment takes seconds.

Rent receipt FAQ
Are landlords required to provide rent receipts?+
Many states and cities require them on request, and some require them for cash payments automatically. Even where optional, refusing one looks bad in any later dispute.
What do tenants use rent receipts for?+
Proof of on-time payment history for future rentals, renter tax credits in several states, employer relocation reimbursements, and benefit applications.
Should a rent receipt show late fees?+
Yes, as their own line. Folding fees into one number muddies the record of what the base rent was and when it was actually paid.
