Definition

What Due on receipt means

There is no grace period: the due date is the day the invoice arrives. Because "receipt" depends on delivery, many businesses print the invoice date as the due date so there is a fixed date to point to.

When to use it

  • One-off jobs for individual customers who pay on completion.
  • Final invoices after a deposit, when the work is handed over on payment.
  • Online payment links, where paying immediately is easy.

How it reads on the invoice

Payment terms: Due on receipt. Invoice date Monday, November 2, 2026. Payment due Monday, November 2, 2026.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the due date blank. Print the invoice date as the due date so reminders have a fixed reference.
  • Using it with business clients who need approval. Their process will not change; agree Net 15 or Net 30 instead.
  • Sending the invoice days after the work. "On receipt" starts when they get it, not when you finished.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to pay an invoice due on receipt?

None formally: payment is due the day you receive it.

Is due on receipt the same as Net 0?

In practice, yes. Both mean there is no credit period.

When is due on receipt a bad idea?

With business clients who run a fixed payment cycle. They will pay on their next run anyway, so the invoice looks overdue from day one.
