Definition

What Net 30 means

Thirty days, counted from the day after the invoice date, weekends and holidays included. Net 30 is the most common business-to-business term because it fits the monthly payment runs most accounts payable teams work to. It is a number of days, not a calendar month, which is where most disputes start.

When to use it

  • Business clients with an accounts payable process and a monthly payment run.
  • Ongoing work billed monthly, where each invoice is paid before the next one arrives.
  • Any client who asks for "standard terms": Net 30 is what most of them mean.

How it reads on the invoice

Terms: Net 30 from the invoice date (Monday, November 2, 2026). Payment due Wednesday, December 2, 2026.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Net 30 as "one month". An invoice dated 31 January 2026 on Net 30 is due 2 March 2026; one month later would have been 28 February.
  • Ignoring holidays at year end. Invoice on 25 November 2026 and Net 30 lands on Christmas Day. Rolled to the next business day that is Monday 28 December in the US, and Tuesday 29 December in England and Wales because 28 December is the Boxing Day substitute.
  • Leaving the start of the clock open. Some buyers count from the day they receive the invoice. Write "from the invoice date" if that is what you mean.
  • Agreeing Net 30 but not printing the date. A due date on the invoice is what your reminders and late-fee policy point to.

Thirty days is also the default in law

In the UK, if no payment date is agreed, the payment is late 30 days after the customer gets the invoice or you deliver, whichever is later. US federal agencies pay 30 days after the payment period starts (generally when a proper invoice is received) when the contract names no date, and a payment due on a weekend or federal holiday may be made the next business day without interest.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Net 30 30 days or one month?

Thirty days. The date only matches "one month later" in 30-day months. From 31 January it is 2 March (2026), from 1 February 2027 it is 3 March 2027.

Does Net 30 start from the invoice date or when the client receives it?

By convention, from the invoice date. Some buyers count from receipt, and UK law uses the later of receipt and delivery when no date was agreed, so put "from the invoice date" in your terms if that is what you agreed.

What if Net 30 lands on a weekend or holiday?

The date itself does not move unless your terms say so. Many businesses accept payment on the next business day. Pick a holiday calendar above and the calculator shows the rolled date and the holiday it skipped.
