Definition

What Net 90 means

Ninety days from the day after the invoice date, weekends and holidays included. Net 90 is about a quarter of a year of credit. It appears in large retail, manufacturing and enterprise supply contracts, and rarely in work a small business would choose to finance.

When to use it

  • Supplying a large retailer or manufacturer whose vendor terms are fixed at 90 days.
  • Contracts that also offer an early-payment discount or invoice financing, so you are not waiting the full quarter.
  • Almost never for services billed by a freelancer or a small firm.

How it reads on the invoice

Payment terms: Net 90. Invoice date Tuesday, December 1, 2026. Payment due Monday, March 1, 2027.

Common mistakes

  • Equating it with "three months". From 1 February 2027, Net 90 is Sunday 2 May 2027; three months later would be 1 May.
  • Missing the weekend and the holiday together. Net 90 from 19 October 2026 is Sunday 17 January 2027. The next US business day is Tuesday 19 January, because Monday 18 January is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
  • Assuming it is enforceable everywhere. In the UK, terms over 60 days must be fair to both businesses, and Spain caps agreed business terms at 60 days.

Long terms are limited in some countries

GOV.UK: an agreed payment date must usually be within 60 days for business transactions, and longer terms must be fair to both businesses. In Spain, Ley 3/2004 does not allow business-to-business payment terms above 60 calendar days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Net 90 a quarter?

Close, but not exactly. The same date three months later is 89 to 92 days away, so the Net 90 date can land up to two days before it or one day after it.

How do I work out Net 90 from today?

Enter today as the invoice date above. The calculator counts 90 calendar days and shows the weekday; Net 90 dates land on a weekend more often than you would expect, so check the roll option.

Can I shorten Net 90 terms?

You can offer a discount for early payment, such as 2% if paid within 10 days, or ask for a deposit before work starts. Both are easier to agree before the contract is signed than after.
